Matt is a 2000 graduate of Texas A&M University School of Law (formerly Texas Wesleyan School of Law), and brings more than two decades of civil litigation experience to Cotten Schmidt, L.L.P. A lifelong resident of North Texas, he and his wife Christy reside in Fort Worth. They enjoy traveling and marveling at the exploits of their 6 children, aged 17 to 27. When not behind a desk or in a courtroom, you can find him on a beach or serving his community through his involvement in politics. A former JAG officer in the Texas State Guard, Matt believes that family, faith, and community are the touchstones of a happy life.

Over the course of his career, Matt spent more than a decade representing insurance companies in complex cases and claims in state and federal courts throughout the Southwest United States, most recently as the director of subrogation litigation for a 10-state region of the nation’s second-largest automobile insurance carrier. He is licensed to practice law in Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, and in the Federal District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern Districts of Texas and the Colorado Federal District.

Matt understands that a hands-on approach to the practice of law, coupled with a willingness to take the fight to the other side, are the keys to success in litigation. He has been trying cases to juries his entire career, and his record of trial successes is a result of his unwavering commitment to preparation and attention to detail.

“A successful trial lawyer is a teacher, a storyteller, an advocate, and a leader.”

At Cotten Schmidt, Matt focuses on commercial and business litigation. He considers himself a problem solver and believes it is his highest calling to find creative ways to address his clients’ needs. He also finds great satisfaction in mentoring the firm’s younger associates.
